The genetics behind the coloring.
For the blue color to be expressed the pup must carry two copies of the blue gene (d/d).
What about blue pied French Bulldogs?
Pied means they have a white base and in this case blue patches. The pied gene is expressed through the S locus and is a recessive gene. This means it needs to inherit two copies of the pied gene to be expressed. They use a capital S to show that the Frenchie is a carrier of the pied gene and n to show it is not. For example, if your pup is pied it must carry two copies of S (S, S).
That’s our Romeo who is blue pied brindle. Brindle just means he has streaks of brown through his blue.
Blue Merle French Bulldogs
The merle gene is interesting as it dilutes random sections of the coat such as lightening the blue pigmented Frenchie and leaving patches of the original color remaining. The edges of the patches often appear jagged and torn. Merle is a dominate gene so it only needs one copy the merle gene to be expressed. You don’t breed merles to other merles so you will not have two copies of merle.
This little guy is blue merle with tan points.
Blue and Tan French Bulldogs
On the A locus, At gives the pups tan points. It’s dominant over “a” so if your pups inherits (At,a) he will be blue with tan points. If he inherits two copies of the tan points gene (At, At) he will be blueand tan points as well.
There are several more varieties you can have as well such as blue merle pied and blue merle with tan points. If you’re asking me, all are beautiful.
